Highland Park Spring Engagement Session: Rochester NY

Eric and Holly are the kind of couple that believes in love at first sight. They share a love of board games, sleeping in and library dates. They’re constantly finding ways to show each other how much they love each other - even by getting engaged to each other twice!

The first time was at Colgate Divinity School, nearby Highland Park. And the other time, she proposed to HIM at the Lilac Festival at Highland Park in Rochester NY. So it was clear to us that being among the lilacs (yay for us) was super important to them as we planned their engagement session.

They fully admit that they’re still in puppy love after five years together. Not going to lie, this made our job a piece of cake. Thank you Holly and Eric for such a fun night together!

Vineyard Wedding Venues Series, Finger Lakes NY: Ventosa Vineyards

There’s no way we could do a Finger Lakes Wedding Venue Series justice without including one of our top favorites - Ventosa Vineyards on Seneca Lake. It honestly feels like a second home to us during wedding season. We love it so much.

RJ and the entire Ventosa Vineyards team are amazing, and they treat every single wedding as if it were one of their own. Every person, from guest to wedding vendor gets treated like family.

Their separate spaces for the wedding ceremony overlook Seneca Lake and the vineyards. Their covered patio is perfect for a rainy day or watching the sunset. And La Vista e Bella Ballroom is their grand gorgeous ballroom, elegant yet inviting.

And as photographers, we can honestly say there is a beautiful backdrop in any direction at Ventosa. Bridal parties have access to the entirety of the grounds for gorgeous backdrops as well as candid wedding photography.

We’ve had the pleasure of photographing weddings at Ventosa in nearly every season of the year, and each and every one is spectacular. So if you are hunting for large, all inclusive wedding venues in the Rochester NY area and the Finger Lakes - you definitely want to stop by Ventosa Vineyards.

Ellison Park Rochester NY Engagement Session: Jessica and Keaton

This spring has been a game of dodging rain drops on the daily. It’s caused us more than a few rescheduled portrait and engagement sessions. So when their night came, and it wasn’t raining for just a few hours - we took advantage of it. It was cold (think winter engagement sessions in Rochester type cold), but Jessica and Keaton weren’t going to let that stop them.

They laughed through their shivering and went with every idea we gave them. As the daylight faded into night, we created beauty out of what could have been dreary Friday night. Thank you Jessica and Keaton for the laughs, the fun and trusting us to capture your relationship.

Vineyard Wedding Venues Series, Finger Lakes NY: Knapp Vineyards

Next up in our Vineyard Venue Wedding Series - Knapp Vineyards on Cayuga Lake!

This was the perfect venue for a small, intimate wedding. Everything about it impressed us. The bridesmaids prepped in a nearby cottage (owned by the vineyard). The restaurant lawn created the perfect backdrop for a sunset wedding ceremony. The restaurant was cozy and intimate.

And the food was. to. die. for! SO GOOD! Customized menus with their amazing wines - so worth it!

And then how about having your dance floor with the backdrop of the barrel room behind you? It creates a picture perfect scene for those first dance photos.

And if you’re able to step away from the party and hit up the amazing sunset in the vineyard - do it. You won’t ever regret it.

Venue Highlights: Shadow Lake Weddings, Rochester NY

We’ve been having fun showing off our vineyard venues, so why not show off a local Rochester wedding venue? Our hope is that we can share a little insight to some of the venues we’ve had the pleasure of working at and give a helping hand to any newly engaged couples!

Shadow Lake has two great reception locations for your wedding day - and we’ve had the pleasure of working in both. The Garden Tent holds approximately 175 people and the newly renovated (and gorgeous) Clubhouse can accommodate up to 250 of your favorite people. Either option has a fantastic waterside view.

You can also have your wedding ceremony right on the grounds - whether on the water or facing the lush greens of the course. Either option creates a picturesque backdrop for your ceremony photographs. (Enter us!)

Beyond that, the staff goes above and beyond to create an amazing day for each and every couple. And the food is fantastic! The chef’s in the kitchen create delicious meals using mostly local and home made ingredients. Yes, please!

Highlighting the whole venue for us is the multitude of options for a variety of great photographs. There are floral scenes, the waterfront and perfect locations for brilliant sunsets.

So if you’re checking out wedding venues in Rochester NY, stop on in and visit Ryan and the team for a tour! We hope to see you there!

Vineyard Wedding Venues Series, Finger Lakes NY: Casa Larga Vineyards

Round two of our Vineyard Wedding venues brings us to Casa Larga. Since we’re photographers in Fairport NY, it’s basically our next door neighbor. And any chance we get to photograph a wedding close to home is a win for us!

I love Casa Larga for it’s amazing sunsets in the vineyards and for the variety of amazing location options to create beautiful wedding photographs. The team is wonderful to work with in helping brides and grooms create the reception of their dreams.

Not too long ago they renovated their ballroom space, which also makes it a huge draw for a winery wedding reception in Rochester NY. It’s a large, grand space with great window light on the dance floor. They can easily accommodate up to 250 guests, so if you have a big guest list, this is a great option for you.

Take a peek and gather some insp from some of the fun and beauty we’ve captured as wedding photographers at Casa Larga Vineyards. Are you having a vineyard wedding? Tell us about it in the comments!

Shadow Lake Wedding Photography, Penfield NY: Christina and Adam

Photographing Adam and Christina’s Fairport wedding felt like coming home. In more ways that one. And not just because we were only ever 10 minutes from home at any given moment.

It felt like home because of the people - these two, and their families are practically family to us. Their wedding kicked off our season with not only the best weather imaginable for an early April day in Rochester, but also the best people and awesome vendors.

We felt peace throughout the house when we arrived, even the flower girls were calm and ready for the day ahead. Because we had planned everything together so thoroughly, all there was left to do was enjoy the day.

And they did. The ceremony at Church of the Assumption in Fairport was love filled and emotional. We met up with Larry (their goldendoodle) and a crowd favorite for his close up on the canal in Fairport. There was even enough time for a snack from McDonalds before heading over to Shadow Lake for their reception. (Which if you haven’t seen their renovations and are looking for a Rochester area wedding venue - stop in there for sure.)

It was the perfect wedding to begin another year as wedding photographers in Rochester NY. We had waited for this day with them for so long. To witness it and be part of it meant everything to us and left us feeling inspired for the season ahead.

Congratulations to you Christina and Adam - thank you for enriching our lives with who you are, individually and together.

Vineyard Wedding Venues Series, Skaneateles NY: Anyela's Vineyard

We’ve worked at so many wedding venues in the Finger Lakes and the Rochester NY area. So many in fact, that we thought it might be helpful to engaged couples to show you a series of some of the vineyard wedding venues we’ve had the pleasure of working at in the area. In the next few weeks we’re going to show you one at a time - so if you’re on the hunt for your perfect Finger Lakes vineyard wedding, follow along!

We’re going to start with Anyela's Vineyard in Skaneatles, NY. It’s a beautiful setting for a wedding. There’s a great gazebo space for a ceremony on a beautiful garden filled lawn. The view is spectacular.

What’s great about Anyela’s is that there’s a separate space for each portion of your wedding. From the ceremony, you head inside to the winery for cocktail hour and then from there, into the beautiful pole tent where the reception will take place. It’s been a bit since we’ve been there, but we remember the meal like it was yesterday.

We love that there is a huge variety of photography options on the grounds of Anyela’s. The flowering beds, the view, the vineyards, and the cellar doors all make for great photo locations. And the sunset scene was to die for. Gorgeous. Enjoy a tiny glimpse of what we loved!

Ventosa Vineyards Wedding, Advice for Wedding Couples from Sara and Larry

Sara and Larry’s Ventosa Wedding was like being at one of our own family weddings. These two and their families made us feel so at home. So when they said they wanted to write up some advice for wedding couples I was so excited. But when we saw what they wrote, I swear it put us over the moon with happiness. We’re so, so honored and I swear to everything, we did not solicit these exact words.

Read on to find their advice for engaged couples:

I have so many favorite pictures, but I  wanted to share the one I attached because I love how it captures so much happiness and fun! I honestly believe that the most important part of our wedding was having you guys share the day with us.

Sara's advice: Do not, under any circumstances, skimp on having the BEST photographers.  This is the most important decision you can make for your wedding. Having an amazing venue is certainly extremely important, but even with the best venue, if you and your photographers don't mesh, or if they don't share your wedding day vision, you will miss out on so much you didn't know was happening throughout the day.

Larry's advice: Take time and enjoy the day because it really does fly by!

Arbor Loft Wedding Photography, in Steph and Paul's Eyes

When we put together a blog post from an awesome Rochester NY Wedding, we tend to use the photos that speak to us the most. They’re the ones we felt pulled to share and also tell a great story about a couples’ wedding day.

But we also love to find out which of your wedding photographs you love too. Sometimes they’re the same as our choices, sometimes they’re not. Steph and Paul shared a few of their favorites from their Downtown Rochester NY Arbor Loft Wedding with us, and why they loved them.

It was a rainy day, so we had to make use of every inch of space The Arbor Loft had available, as well as every ounce of creativity we had. If you’re wondering how we did it, you can do a lot with a simple window and hallway when you need to.

So here’s what they shared with me, and why they’re their favorites - from angles and composition, to showing true personalities all the way to capturing the most authentic and memorable moments.

“We loved the location and the series was a perfect representation representation of Paul's personality.”

“During our ceremony, when it was time for Paul to repeat his vows he had a moment of uncontrollable nervous laughter which in turn triggered Steph to laugh. It was an absolutely real moment that we found to be endearing and raw. It was so spontaneously unexpected and we both just ran with it. We'll never forget it and it will always be one of my favorite memories from that day.”

FAQ: Our Wedding Photography Style, Rochester NY

What's our Style? It's very a common question. It's a question that every wedding website and bridal magazine in Rochester tells couples to ask.  A common answer from a wedding photographer might simply be: "photojournalistic” or “candid.” I mean, those are the buzzwords couples want to hear, right?

They’re great answers. However, we feel that there's a bit more to a photography style, and a wedding day than strictly photojournalism. Which is where we come in, because we believe that our style is composed of two distinct roles as a photographer. One where both of us are fully able to fill both roles.

Our wedding photography is a beautiful blend of the romance you want to see in each other, and the documentary style of photography that tells the real story as it's happening. All the while, our focus is on the very real relationships that matter to you.

As you look through our wedding portfolio page, you'll see what we mean.

You'll also notice that our images are clean and timeless. Do we offer black and white? Yes, because it's a classic look. That said, we purposely choose NOT to use faded filters and effects on our images. Why? Because we don't follow fads. Because when you look back at your wedding album in 25 years, you don't want to say "Oh look, the Instagram Era." Your album will always look timeless and real.

Because a wedding is more than just one style of photography. Between the two of us, we each have an eye and a love for both!

Two viewpoints, to tell one timeless story - yours.

Three Reasons We Love Elopements: Rochester NY Small Weddings

We love weddings. All weddings. It’s not a secret.

Every shape, every size, even small ones. Even ones where there’s just a couple and an officiant. We love being elopement photographers in Rochester just as much as any other wedding.

If you think eloping is right for you, you could be on the right track with your wedding planning. Here’s three reasons why we love photographing these small weddings in the Finger Lakes or close to home here in Rochester.

1) More time for what YOU want: From the very start there’s more time. Before the wedding day there is more time to spend dreaming of the future together rather than wedding planning. There’s more time on your wedding day to spend with each other, loving on each other and relishing in the moment together. Or, if you invited guests, cherishing more than a minute with them.

And - (yes, shameless plus) if you have placed importance in an elopement photographer, you have more time to create beautiful portraits that celebrate your story. Because even though you eloped, you still deserve to remember this moment in photographs years from now.

2) You can focus on what’s important: The most common thing we capture when we’re photographing an elopement is the ceremony itself. To us that means you’re focusing on what’s important to you. In this case, the actual process of becoming a married couple. The words you say and the meaning behind them. You’re focusing on each other’s emotions and what that person means to you. That’s the good stuff right there. We love capturing these moments.

3) It’s perfect, no matter what: When there’s a lot less to plan, there’s a lot less that can “go wrong.” This equates to a lot less work and a more relaxed “you” on your wedding day. We love that relaxed feeling because it really shows in your photographs. And if something does go wrong, just remember that at the end of the day, as long as you got married - everything went perfectly.

So if you’re thinking of eloping, it’s ok. We hope that you’ll still consider hiring a professional photographer to document your day, because your family history is worth it. In the end we applaud whatever decision you choose, whether a large affair or just you and your spouse to be. We love your wedding, because it’s about you.
