5 Tips for great wedding photography : rochester ny photographers

We've been the Bride, we've been the bridesmaids, and we've also been the wedding planners. On top of that...we're in the market to make great wedding photographs for you. It's our goal to give you a great experience and awesome images. That being said, there are a few things you can do to get some great images from your big day. We've compiled a few tips that might give you some things to think about as you plan your day, from our humble perspectives.

1) Consider doing a first look on the day of your wedding. We talk a lot about them. Get all of those important photographs done in advance, while you look your best! And have a special moment to yourselves before the guests arrive.

2) Do an engagement session. It's a great chance to practice being in front of the camera! You'll get comfortable in front of the camera, on your own terms, doing something fun together with your fiancee! Knowing how your photographers will work with you will make your actual wedding day so much smoother, and your photographs will reflect that. Besides that, it's a lot of fun!

3) Work together. We make it a point to go over the timeline of your day with you. We want to make sure there's enough time for all of the important details. We'll tell you if you have enough time planned for photography because it's important that you and your photographers are on the same page all day! From working with you on your list of family photographs, to planning driving time in between locations. There's so many things that a Bride and Groom can overlook in timeline planning.

By planning ahead with us, we'll make sure that your day is as stress free as possible because we already know what to expect! That way you'll be able to enjoy that time in front of the camera so much more!

4) Don't rely on a pinterest "shot list." We love Pinterest for gathering ideas. It's a great place to share and learn, and to design your flowers and wedding color scheme. But when it comes to specific photographs you want taken, don't rely on it completely! It's perfectly ok to share your ideas, but it's less ok to expect that exact same photograph you found on Pinterest. You are hiring photographers based on their style, and their unique vision for your day. And while I'm on that note, be sure you know what your photographer's style is!

5) Request an unplugged wedding At the VERY least, unplug your ceremony. It makes us sad when a camera sticks out in that perfect moment of you seeing your fiance, or looking over at your dad. Let your guests have their hashtag fun at the reception, but ask them to stay in the moment with you when it counts. Your photographer is there to get the shot. We have a variety of ways over on Pinterest to help you get your point across.

Bonus Tip - Most importantly, trust us.  If your photographers come to you with what you think is a crazy idea - trust them! Sometimes the craziest ideas create amazing artwork for your walls. Again, you hired them for a reason...let go, trust them, and just have fun with the whole experience!

Chelsea & Steve: Rochester NY Engagement Session

Five minutes into my first phone call with Chelsea, I knew we were perfect together. In talking about their upcoming wedding, she told me she wanted it to be relaxed and fun, with all of the people who were important to them surrounding them.

Yes, oh yes, that's exactly what we want too. Like I said, perfect.

But enough about me, since we're not the only ones who are perfect together. Chelsea and her fiance, Steve are clearly perfect for each other. They laugh together easily, and fit comfortably in each other's arms like puzzle pieces. Sigh.... yes, beautiful. Honestly, what more can you ask for at an engagement session?

Well, since you asked - you could have the perfect night, one without rain for a change. You could also have a great setting, such as Linear Park in Penfield. All of this came together for a picture perfect engagement session.

We didn't have to go far into the woods to create great images, and we did so until the sun started to set around us. What a great night! Enjoy! ~ Erin

Erin's 365 Project begins : Rochester NY photography

2015-02-02_0001

As Lori finished up her year in photographs on December 31st 2014, mine began. Only 334 days to go, I'm just getting started. I was inspired to see so many of my photographer friends complete their project last year, and decided it was the right time to begin mine. So I guess I should warn you of three things as I embark on this photographic journey.

1) The overwhelming majority of this project will focus on my son, my family and my dog. These are the most important things in my life, and this is a milestone year for us. Lucas is going to change so much, so fast, and we're all going to change with him. So naturally, this is my inspiration for this endeavor. If you don't want to see cute pictures of babies or my dog, don't look.  :)

2) I'm not burdening myself with any rules. It's hard enough to complete a 365 project without adding rules in. Besides that I know me, I'll miss a day or two. Some days I'll use my iPhone instead of my DSLR. Some days might include an Instagram filter. Or, some might include two images. Again - it's my project, my rules, right?

3) Some of my images are probably going to be boring. I'm not sure that this can be avoided, but you can bet there will be a few days where nothing exciting happens. Not every day of a year is photographic gold.

So here we go folks, my 365 project begins. I'll need your help and encouragement to keep going. I know from watching others do it, that it's a big undertaking. I'm proud of myself for trying, and so far succeeding.

This month focused on Lucas, a fun family wedding in Chicago, and other random goodies. January is complete, bring it on February. Only 334 days to go.

In no particular order, here's January! ~ Erin

Laura and Kevin: Letchworth State Park Engagement Session

2014-11-05_0013

If you ask me, I knew when Laura met Kevin that she'd found the right guy. There was something in the way she talked about him that gave her away. But that's just this girl's opinion. I've been honored to watch this relationship grow from "I think I like him," to "We're getting married!" He makes her laugh, and she does the same for him. Their cute and cuddly pets are koi fish. Apparently, Kevin also enjoys turtles. They're favorite things to do together include "waterfall observation" and "legos!"  They're nerdy, artsy-smartsy, and silly.

Quite honestly they're absolutely perfect together.

I'm doubly honored to get to be a part of their wedding day story, as an MOH. We are currently on the hunt for the perfect dress. One which not only looks glamorous, but in which I can photograph as well. Because, well...it's me, I don't know how to NOT shoot at a wedding. Thankfully, Lori will have us covered as well.

For their engagement session, we returned to the scene of the proposal at Letchworth State Park. It was a beautiful night, for a beautiful couple! I can't wait to see what the future holds for these two. In the meantime - let the dress hunt continue! As Kevin would say "Adventure!"

Gail and Greg: A Fairport Engagement Session

They're dog people - that's just one of the reasons that we love Gail and Greg. You'll usually find them outdoors, together with their springer spaniels Autumn and Cody. They also enjoy traveling, kayaking and visiting coffee shops together. When they wanted to bring the dogs to their engagement session, of course we said yes! So with their energetic puppies in the lead, we headed down the canal path in Fairport. What made this location perfect, is that it's where they got engaged in May. Greg asked Gail to take a walk down the path with her, and then asked to to marry her. Their story feels so cozy - perfect for them as a couple.

We can't wait to share their wedding with them next summer as they continue down their path together. Until then, enjoy some of the fall foliage and fun we had at their engagement session! ~Erin 2014-11-05_0010.jpg 2014-11-05_0009.jpg 2014-11-05_0008.jpg 2014-11-05_0012.jpg 2014-11-05_0011.jpg

Rich & Lisa: Village Gate, Cobbs Hill Engagement Session

2014-07-25_0001

They have known each other since high school, and have been together for 3 years. In all that time, Lisa and Rich continue to make each other laugh every day. Whether at each other, or their two adorable pups Maxim and Mia - who of course made a special appearance in these engagement photos! It just so happened that on the night of their session, it was a 90 degree day. But they were all troopers as we got started on Cobbs Hill. We continued on after that at Village Gate Square. Salena's Restaurant was the scene of their first date, so it was a lot of fun to stop in for a drink and a few great images there as well.

Despite the heat, it was a fun session! We can't wait to see what their May 2015 wedding brings. My initial guess...less heat, but still a lot of love to share. Can't wait! ~ Erin

Christa & Frank : Honeoye Falls Engagement Session

The day called for snow flurries, but by the time we reached the falls, the skies were clearing up. And even though this winter engagement session was a bit chilly, the warmth between Christa and Frank was clear to see. You could see it every time they laughed together. We started outdoors, near the falls. While I usually prefer my flip flops, the beauty of the frozen falls and snow on the ground added to this session perfectly. While we were there, we visited The Brewery, a nearby restaurant and bar. It's one of their favorite places to go. So it was only right we pulled up to the bar and grabbed a few fun images there also. I loved the way their eyes light up when they smile at each other. Love, love, love it, and can't wait to see more!

Enjoy this little glimpse at the time we spent together!

the "why" behind engagement portraits : engagement sessions rochester ny

You've shared the news with your family and friends and started the wedding planning; getting engaged is such an exciting time. We're really enjoying getting to know so many great, newly engaged, couples so far this winter. However, with each couple we meet, a popular question keeps arising - "Is an engagement session really necessary? I mean, we're just going to have the wedding photographs soon after, right?" Well, since it's been a hot topic for us lately, here's our two cents on why we feel engagement sessions are important. First and foremost, it allows you as a couple, an opportunity to feel more comfortable. Not only in front of the camera, but with us. We know that no one starts out feeling comfortable with a camera aimed at them. Getting a chance to work with us before your wedding will definitely help you feel better about the camera on your wedding day. Consider it a practice round. The more we get to know each other, the better your photographs will be. You'll be more willing to open up to us and be yourselves, which is so important.

Beyond that, an engagement session is a great way to really show off your personality in a more casual way. We encourage our couples to pick the location for their session based on who they are, and what they love to do together. Maybe it's where you first met, or first kissed. It could be at home in front of your fireplace, or on a hike with your dog. It could even be in your favorite downtown Rochester location. Or if you're having a fall wedding, but LOVE spring flowers, we can set your session up during the spring, to show you as a couple in multiple seasons. If you have a puppy you want to include, but can't bring to the wedding, your engagement session is that opportunity! The options are truly never ending.

Even some of our most bashful grooms have walked away from their engagement session saying, "Wow, that was more fun than I thought it would be."  We take that as a huge compliment!

Ultimately, it's a chance to be you, while creating some fun, memorable image for wall portraits, your guest book, and save the date cards. If you choose to, these images can also add another dimension to your wedding album - telling your story from fiancees to husband and wife. What we love is getting to know the real you, before the nerves of the wedding day set in.

Fall engagement session, Mendon Ponds Park, Cobblestone House

When we met them, they were yet to be engaged to – yet we had begun planning for their engagement session. She knew it was coming, and she knew she'd say yes! Born in different countries, they've found each other and now live here together with their cute little Papillon pup.

We had the perfect late October afternoon for their session at Mendon Ponds Park. It was just us and the deer, who were surrounding us as we worked. Congratulations you two!
