4 Reasons Why We Love Silliness in Family Pictures
Mt. Hope Cemetery Family Portraits: Rochester NY Photographers
If you’ve ever worried that your kids are “too much” for family pictures, you’re not alone. Many families come portrait session feeling pressure to behave and smile perfectly for the camera.
The truth is, some of the most meaningful family pictures happen when everyone lets go… just a little.
Because being silly during your portrait session isn’t bad. In fact, it often leads to the pictures families love the most.
For example: This family of three brings so much playfulness into their pictures, and it’s one of the reasons we love photographing them. They decided to lean into Halloween vibes for this October session by visiting Mt. Hope Cemetery. L’s headband made her look like a little black cat, so she fit into the scene perfectly. They laughed, made silly faces, danced and played their way through their annual family portrait session.
Here’s why we love it when your silly at your family portrait session:
1) Moments matter more than perfect poses.
Perfectly posed photos can look polished, but they often miss the way kids naturally move, laugh, and explore. When families are allowed to play a little, everyone relaxes and the image reflect who you truly are.
2) Silliness helps everyone relax.
Laughter quickly softens faces and releases the pressure of trying to do everything “right.” Play gives kids a reset and lets parents step out of management mode and into the moment.
3) Play brings out real connection.
Some of the most meaningful photos happen right after a silly moment turns into a hug or shared laugh. These in-between interactions show how your family connects, not just how well you pose for the camera.
4) The “silly” photos are often the favorites.
While calm portraits matter, our families often love the laughing, candid images. Those family photos tend to bring back feelings and memories long after the session ends.
How We Encourage Play During Family Pictures
Family pictures do not need to be serious from start to finish. There is room for both portraits and playful moments. We try create an environment where families feel comfortable being themselves. That might mean simple movement games, letting kids lead for a moment, or encouraging parents to focus on your kids instead of focusing on the camera.
Your family photos do not need to be serious or perfectly posed to be meaningful.
What matters most is capturing who you are together right now. If that includes laughter, movement, curiosity, or a little silliness, These aren’t things to avoid - they’re things worth remembering.
