Family Photos in Fairport NY This Spring: Tips, Timing, and Locations

Spring is a popular time for family pictures in Fairport, and honestly, it makes sense. The gray winter skies are starting to transform, giving us back the good light we crave as photographers. People are happy to be outside again as everything starts to wake up. That energy shows up in pictures.

That said, spring around here has a mind of its own. If you've lived in the Rochester area for more than five minutes, you know that the weather does what it wants. Within a 24 hour time span, we can easily go from 65 to 15 degrees.

Keep reading below for what to keep in mind before your spring family portrait so you're not caught unprepared.

Picking the Right Location for Spring Family Photos

Our families ask about timing a lot. Cherry blossoms around Rochester typically peak in late April, and lilacs follow in mid-May, but it shifts every year depending on how the season plays out. A warm March can move everything up. A cold snap can push it back. We've learned not to promise flowers.

What we can promise is that even if you miss the peak, spring still gives you soft colors, fresh textures, and light that makes everyone look great. Spring doesn't have to be at its pinnacle to create great family pictures.

Early spring can look a little bare in wide open parks before things fill in, so we look for spots with built-in variety: evergreens, water features, and elements like bridges or interesting architecture. Eastman Museum in Rochester and the parks in the Perinton area are reliable favorites. We also regularly photograph family pictures at Schoen Place in Pittsford, Webster Arboretum, and throughout the greater Rochester area. There's always something interesting to work with.

The Best Time of Day for Family Photos in Fairport NY

For outdoor family photography we love early to mid-morning for softer light and also early evening (golden hour) for that warm, glowy look everyone's after. Both work beautifully for spring sessions in Fairport and the surrounding communities. The window of opportunity shifts throughout the year, so we'll always do our best to point you in the right direction.

What to Wear for Spring Family Pictures

Soft neutrals and pastels tend to photograph beautifully in spring light. Skip the heavy fabrics (nobody wants to look like they're dressed for February when the lilacs are out), and layer up so you can adjust if the temperature does something surprising. Coordinated but not matchy-matchy is the sweet spot.

Here are a few more of our thoughts on what to wear for family pictures.

On Weather and Flexibility

If the weather is downright awful, we'll reschedule. It's as simple as that. But overcast days are genuinely great for family pictures in the Fairport area. The light is soft and even, nobody's squinting, and the colors pop. So if you show up on a cloudy day, don't be disappointed.

Also, prepare for the wind. Spring can be pretty breezy in Rochester. Simple hairstyles hold up better than elaborate ones, and movement in dresses and hair can look really beautiful in photos. Bring a brush and let's go for it.

Spring mornings and evenings can still be cold, parks can be muddy, and comfortable shoes will serve you much better than cute ones if we're moving between outdoor spots. Nothing sidetracks a session like cold, soggy kids.

A few things worth packing:

  • A brush or comb and hair ties

  • Tissues or wipes for runny noses

  • A small towel for wet and muddy shoes

  • A light jacket or wrap, especially for kids

  • A neutral outdoor blanket for sitting or as a prop

Real Life Makes the Best Family Photos

The family portrait sessions that turn out best are almost never the ones where everything went exactly as planned. Kids get a little messy. Somebody's hair does something unexpected. The blooms peaked last week. It doesn't matter. When you stop trying to control every detail and just let it happen, you end up with photos that actually look like your family - and that's the whole point.
